What is Project Genie?
Project Genie is your whole-school solution to teaching Climate Change in primary schools.
It educates and empowers children to produce rapid, meaningful and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
Project Genie will thus save money in both school and home, whilst also saving the Planet. What makes Genie any different from the stack of other ‘Sustainability Packages’ around? ‘Project Genie’ is different. It is:
- Unique: Focussed solely on Climate Change- a mandated part of the curriculum.
- High Quality: ‘Blue chip’ science from core partners including the Environment Institute of University College London, and the UK Meteorological Office. Teaching materials developed by teachers for teachers.
- Independent: Developed by independent scientists, authors, artists, designers and teachers. It is not owned, governed or directed by any company.
- Validated: Six years in development, Project Genie has been tested with 34,000 children in 140 schools. Reductions in electricity use were often above 40%. Cash savings resulted.
- Loved: by individuals, politicians, teachers, children, organisations and companies.
OK. So what if I’m interested. What do I get?
As a teacher, you can get a great deal.
- Access to a full set of diverse and varied cross-curricular lesson plans, covering ten core areas of the curriculum for both KS1 and KS2. These will be regularly augmented, updated and refreshed.
- A full background science brief ('The Truth About Climate Change' Q&A) for you, produced in association with the UK Meteorological Office and the Science Museum.
- Full scientific background text at beginner, intermediate, and ‘advanced’
level for students (and parents!) of all abilities.
- A ‘live science feed’- meaning that you are up-to-date and fully informed.
- A book for every child, 'The Genie in the Bottle' written by award-winning children’s author Hugh Montgomery.
This can be provided by Genie in printed form, with one copy per child to keep.
- Downloadable multi-media resources such as our 15 minute film version of the
Genie in the Bottle book. Sign up to recieve more information about the film
narrated by Tom Baker.
- Electronic measurement tools- to record energy use, and offer feedback advice on how to save energy- and an audit of success.
Sounds good. Expensive? No!
Genie is not-for-profit and our costs are very low. The full year's teaching programme and online tools costs about £1 per child (given a big enough school) - that’s only 2p per child per week! Typically that's £150 per year for a whole primary school. Energy savings will far exceed that - usually many thousands of pound.
As we scale, our costs will fall and all profits will be invested educating and equipping schools in the developing world to address the growing sustainable energy, security and health equality challenges of Climate Change. We intend to build a global platform for children to make a difference for their future, wherever in the world.
OK. I think I might want this? How do I get it?
We plan to roll out steadily over the 2010.
